A chilling wind whispers through Nathan Phillips Square. It carries the echoes of a distant battle. Before you stands the Peace Through Valour Memorial. This powerful bronze sculpture commemorates the more than 93000 Canadians who fought in the Italian Campaign of World War II.
The Peace Through Valour Memorial is more than just a statue. It’s a poignant tribute to a often overlooked chapter of Canadian history. The Italian Campaign lasted 20 months. Canadians fought alongside American French and British troops. Their efforts were vital. They helped liberate Italy and shift German resources away from the Eastern Front. This eased pressure on the Soviet Union. The cost was immense. Over 26000 Canadians were wounded. Sadly almost 6000 died.
Look closer. You see a seven by seven foot topographical map of Ortona. This Italian town bore the brunt of a brutal Christmastime battle in 1943. The medieval streets became a deadly labyrinth. Canadian soldiers fought house to house. They smashed through buildings to liberate the devastated town. The map shows the destruction. At each corner stand bronze figures. They are Canadian soldiers vigilantly guarding the memory of their fallen comrades.
Artist Ken Lum drew inspiration from photographs and paintings. He used Canadian artist Charles Comfort’s work to depict the town’s destruction. The sculpture is meant to be viewed with downcast eyes. It’s designed to engage people of all ages. The Peace Through Valour Memorial is a 3D printed bronze masterpiece. It is a powerful visual representation of the sacrifice and resilience of the Canadian soldiers.
The Italian-Canadian community donated this monument. They established the Peace Through Valour committee to honour these brave soldiers. It was unveiled in 2016. Many veterans attended the ceremony. Retired Sergeant Herb Pike thanked the Italian people for their welcome. Other memorials honour these soldiers. They are located in Commonwealth cemeteries throughout Italy and at the Cassino War Cemetery south of Rome.
