A whisper of history hangs in the air. Before you stands the Pauluskirche in Trier a neo-Romanesque gem. Its story is one of resilience and change.

Originally a parish founded around 700 AD the first Pauluskirche stood near the Irminenfreihof. This original structure lasted a millennium before demolition in 1790. Deterioration forced its end. The church was simply too old and broken.

The secularization of 1803 altered Trier’s religious landscape. The nearby monastery’s church became a temporary parish church. It served the community until a magnificent replacement was built. This new Pauluskirche emerged between 1905 and 1907. Designed by Wilhelm Schmitz it boasts a striking corner tower.

This new church became a landmark a significant part of Trier’s skyline. It wasn’t without its trials however. In 2016 a rockfall damaged the structure. This event raised serious concerns about the building’s stability. The damage was repaired. The cause of the rockfall however remains unknown.

Decreasing church attendance led to the church’s profanation in 2017. The Pauluskirche then faced an uncertain future. Plans for conversion emerged. Students at Trier University of Applied Sciences even proposed a library or a casino.

The Pauluskirche held other treasures. Before its profanation the tomb of Hieronymus Jaegen was within its walls. In 2018 it was reinterred at Saint Gangolf. Three historic bronze bells cast in 1837 were also relocated to Saint Michael’s Church in Kirchberg. They had survived World War II damage. The bells found a new home after refurbishment.

The church’s original interior largely vanished during renovations in the 1960s. A notable exception is a crucifixion group from Saint Martin’s Abbey. Dated 1498 it now resides in the Pauluskirche. It found a safe haven there. Replicas were placed in the abbey to keep the original safe.

The Pauluskirche’s story is more than bricks and mortar. It represents the ebb and flow of faith. The changing needs of a city. It even hosted an interactive exhibition Dialogue in the Dark and a show called The Last Battle for Rome. This once sacred space is now a testament to the enduring spirit of Trier. A building ready for a new chapter.
