Why is there a plaque here? This, my friends, is the Paul Speiser Plaque. It commemorates the life and work of Paul Speiser, a prominent Austrian politician who dedicated his life to social democracy and the betterment of Vienna. Born in 1877, Speiser rose through the ranks of the Socialist Democratic Workers’ Party, eventually becoming a member of both the Austrian Parliament and the Vienna City Council. As a city councilor, he served Vienna from 1920 to 1934 and again after World War II from 1945 to 1947. He even held the esteemed position of Vice Mayor of Vienna from 1945 until his death in 1947. Speiser’s political career was tragically interrupted during the turbulent years of Austria’s history. In 1934, he was arrested and imprisoned for his political beliefs. He faced further hardship in 1944 when he was imprisoned again. Despite these setbacks, his commitment to social justice never wavered. The Paul Speiser Plaque stands as a testament to his enduring legacy.
