This new church though was different. It was rebuilt on the old foundations. Professor Paul Heim a member of the congregation designed it. He envisioned a cruciform structure. A courtyard surrounded by buildings. This courtyard the Paul-Gerhardt-Hof resembles the cloister at Hirsau. It includes the church the parsonage a kindergarten and even a home for widows.
The Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche wasn’t just a place of worship. It was the heart of a community. A community that grew rapidly. The church’s growth mirrored the expansion of Stuttgart’s western hillsides. Even this complex soon proved too small. In 1976 a new community center was added. It boasts ample space for gatherings and activities. The community center also includes a daycare. Apartments and playgrounds are incorporated into the design. This significant addition reflects the ongoing need for more space. The community continued to thrive.
The Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche’s story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about the people. The countless worshippers who sought solace within its walls. The dedicated pastors who guided their flocks. The vibrant musical traditions. The Paul-Gerhardt-Kammerorchester and choir enrich the church’s legacy. It’s a testament to the resilience of faith and community.
