Nestled between Route 27 and Route 97 lies a hidden gem. It is a treasure of natural beauty. This is Patuxent River State Park.
Patuxent River State Park spans Howard and Montgomery counties. It encompasses 6700 acres of pristine natural areas and farmlands. A portion of the park is a designated state wildlands area.
Planning for Patuxent River State Park started in 1963. The Maryland General Assembly funded land purchases from 1964 to 1968.
But wait there is more.
The Patuxent River itself is the longest river contained entirely within Maryland. It transforms from a slow stream to a wide tidal estuary. It empties into the Chesapeake Bay.
Here at Patuxent River State Park recreational opportunities abound. Hunting enthusiasts find designated areas for their sport. Anglers can test their skills in the catch-and-release trout stream. Hikers and horseback riders explore unmarked trails. The Maryland Park Service does not rent horses. It only provides trails for recreation.
Please note that Patuxent River State Park maintains public trails in two areas. Three miles of trails lie in the Southern Area between Route 97 and Howard Chapel Road. Six miles of trails are in the Central Area between Annapolis Rock Road and Mullinix Mill Road. Trail maps are available for both areas.
Now for a word of caution.
Other areas of Patuxent River State Park have many unmarked social trails. These trails were created by hikers, hunters, and equestrians over time. Park staff does not maintain these paths. Use them at your own risk. It is recommended to bring a cell phone and GPS technology when venturing along social trails. The Duty Ranger number is 443-962-0216.
If you find yourself at the Hipsley Mill Road area know this. It consists of a floodplain of varying width along the Patuxent River. It is bounded by wooded hills or fields. This spans about 400 acres. Deciduous woods and small streams dot the area.
Birdwatchers rejoice. Over 135 species have been reported at the Hipsley Mill Road area of Patuxent River State Park. Forest interior birds are the main attraction. You may also see field birds in open areas.
Remember Patuxent River State Park offers diverse habitats. These include bottomland deciduous forests and hedgerows. You can also find upland deciduous forests and shrubby meadows. Marshes and streams complete the landscape.
Almost 1600 acres of Patuxent River State Park near Hipsley Mill Road are designated as a State Wildlands. These areas retain their wilderness character. They protect rare species. Passive recreation like birding and hiking is permitted here.
