The Dutch invasion followed. They destroyed the Tabanan Kingdom. They exiled the royal family to Lombok. But young Sagung Ayu Wah escaped their notice.
She was a brave young woman. She rallied the people of Wangaya in Tabanan. She led a rebellion against the Dutch. She used the sacred weapons Ki Gedebongbelus and Ki Tinjaklesung from Batukaru. These were powerful weapons. They temporarily disabled Dutch weaponry.
The Dutch were baffled. Their guns and cannons stopped working. They retreated seeking safety. They even used the Ki Tulup Empet weapon to counter Sagung Wah’s power. The Dutch guns began firing again. The battle turned against Sagung Ayu Wah.
She and her remaining soldiers fled to Wangaya. Then she moved to Puri Anyar Kerambitan. Later she was tricked into returning to Tabanan. There she was captured and exiled to Lombok. Some say she died in prison.
Despite her fate Sagung Ayu Wah remains a hero. People still remember her bravery. This statue in Tabanan is a tribute to her. It is a symbol of resistance against oppression.
