“Imagine a place dedicated to keeping the wheels of Sāo Paulo turning. That place is Pátio Capão Redondo. It is not a park or historical landmark in the traditional sense. It is a vital maintenance yard for the city’s metro system.
Pátio Capão Redondo plays a crucial role. It keeps the Line 5-Lilás trains running smoothly. Think of it as a pit stop for these essential vehicles.
Construction began in May 2001. It concluded in September 2002. The project was extensive. Consbem was contracted by the Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos CPTM. The work included everything. It ranged from blueprints to the final touches. Electrical and hydraulic systems were installed. Visual communication elements were created. The entire yard was urbanized.
Covering 75000 square meters, Pátio Capão Redondo is substantial. Fifteen buildings comprise the yard. They total 13810 square meters of constructed area. The project used 165 tons of structural steel. It also consumed 5763 cubic meters of concrete. 450 tons of construction steel were utilized.
The yard is divided into fifteen key blocks. Each block serves a specific purpose. Block A is the maintenance and rolling stock workshop. Block B houses operations personnel. Block C is the central energy plant. Block D handles maintenance and provisioning. Block E serves as the warehouse. Block F is the administration building. Block G contains a wheel lathe. Block H is the vehicle workshop. Block I stores flammable materials. Block J provides general maintenance. Block K is the train washing facility. Block L is the water tower. Block M offers open-air maintenance. Block N is the guardhouse. Block P is the gatehouse. Finally, Block Q houses the compressors.
In December 2024, a new Polícia Militar base opened at Pátio Capão Redondo. This base houses the 4th Company of the 37th Battalion. Over 120 officers are stationed here. They provide 24-hour security.
Pátio Capão Redondo is more than just a maintenance yard. It represents progress and development. It ensures that Sāo Paulo remains connected. It keeps the city moving forward.
