A humble chapel once stood here. That small building served a burgeoning community. It was the Pastoral São João Bosco. The year was 1955. Its history began not as a grand church but as a simple oratory. Called Casa Dom Bosco it served as a gathering place. It was a testament to faith’s enduring power.
The community around the Pastoral São João Bosco grew rapidly. Soon the little chapel couldn’t hold everyone. So the people worked together. They collected money to build a larger chapel. Their dedication led to a significant expansion. The new chapel attracted even more worshippers.
This growing congregation didn’t go unnoticed. Cardinal Dom Ângelo Rossi the Archbishop of São Paulo recognized their devotion. He elevated the community to parish status in 1965. He chose the Salesians of Don Bosco to lead the parish. This was a significant step. The Salesians were known for their work with youth. Their focus on youth formation shaped the parish’s identity. Father Essetino Andreazza became the first parish priest. He served for six years.
The new parish even included a nearby SESI school. The school provided education to 186 students. It even offered adult literacy classes. This was a pivotal moment. The Pastoral São João Bosco was becoming a vital part of the neighborhood.
But even the new chapel proved too small. The community again rallied. They aimed to build a grand church. This church would be modern. It would reflect the changing needs of the liturgy. The initial design faced numerous challenges. A revised design was created. This design was better suited to the land. It resulted in the magnificent church we see today.
The new church was truly remarkable. It was so advanced that USP students visited. They came to study its innovative design. The official inauguration was August 28 1977. Even then the building wasn’t fully finished. Later additions included a sacristy a confessional and upgraded sound systems.
Images of Don Bosco and Our Lady Help of Christians arrived from Italy in 1978. Their arrival coincided with a vigil of prayer and song. Today the Pastoral São João Bosco has extensive outreach programs. It serves over thirty thousand people. The parish boasts more than forty groups. It continues its mission of evangelization. Every weekend hundreds gather for mass. This testament to faith stands as a beacon of hope. It’s a place where the community thrives. The Pastoral São João Bosco continues its legacy. It serves as a vibrant heart of the Alto da Lapa.
