Gaze upon the magnificent Parrocchia Santissimo Redentore. Its white facade gleams under the Venetian sun. This breathtaking church stands as a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Venice.

The Parrocchia Santissimo Redentore also known as Il Redentore is more than just a beautiful building. It is a votive church. It was built to thank God for delivering Venice from a devastating plague. Between 1575 and 1576 a terrible plague swept through Venice. Around 46000 people perished representing 25-30% of the population. The Venetian Senate commissioned Andrea Palladio a master of Renaissance architecture to design this magnificent structure.

Palladio’s genius shines through in Il Redentore’s design. The church’s placement on the waterfront of the Canale della Giudecca provides stunning views. It dominates the Giudecca island skyline. The facade is inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. The fifteen steps leading to the entrance are a subtle yet powerful nod to the Temple of Jerusalem. Palladio believed that the ascent to the church should be gradual fostering greater devotion.

Construction began in 1577 and concluded in 1592. Upon its consecration Pope Gregory XIII requested the church be entrusted to the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. A small community of Friars still resides in the adjacent monastery. A fascinating detail is the annual procession that still takes place. The Doge and senators once crossed a temporary pontoon bridge from the Zattere to Giudecca to attend Mass. This tradition continues today as part of the Festa del Redentore a major Venetian festival. The spectacular fireworks display precedes the annual procession.

Il Redentore’s interior is equally impressive. A harmonious blend of white stucco and gray stone creates a serene atmosphere. The uninterrupted Corinthian order encircles the interior. The church houses an impressive collection of artwork by masters like Tintoretto Veronese and Bassano. Sadly in May 2022 vandals defaced the facade with pink paint. Thankfully government art officials are overseeing its restoration.

The Parrocchia Santissimo Redentore stands as a powerful symbol. It represents not only the city’s resilience during a time of tragedy but also the enduring power of faith and art. Its stunning architecture and rich history continue to captivate visitors from all over the world. As you stand before Il Redentore remember the countless stories it holds within its walls. Let its beauty fill you with awe and wonder.
