Parriwi Head Light, also known as Rosherville Light, isn’t your typical lighthouse. It’s one of four “Disney Castle” style lighthouses gracing Sydney’s shores. Parriwi Head Light plays a crucial role, serving as the rear range light, guiding ships safely into Port Jackson. Grotto Point Light, almost exactly a mile across the harbor, acts as the front light. Picture a ship navigating the treacherous waters. Sailors carefully align the shorter Grotto Point Light with the taller Parriwi Head Light to ensure a precise course into the harbor. Built in 1911, Parriwi Head Light has witnessed over a century of maritime history. Originally, a red light powered by a carbide lamp with acetylene gas illuminated the night. Later, compressed gas cylinders, delivered by boat, fueled the light. Today, the light shines a vibrant green, powered by the suburban electrical grid. The light itself emanates from a horizontal slit just below the dome of this unique concrete tower, standing 50 feet tall. Parriwi Head Light offers more than just maritime history. The surrounding Parriwi Lighthouse Park, managed by Mosman Municipal Council, offers breathtaking views.
