Established in 1820 Parramatta Marist High School boasts a rich history. It stands as the first Catholic school in Australia. This impressive institution was founded by the determined Irish priest John Therry. He envisioned a place of learning for the growing community. Initially under the guidance of George Morley the school opened its doors in Hunter Street Parramatta.
Thirty-one pupils both boys and girls attended the school. Interestingly 24 were Catholic and seven Protestant. This reflects the diverse population of early colonial Australia. Parramatta Marist High School moved to a new location in 1837. This was next to the newly constructed St Patrick’s Cathedral.
The school continued to thrive. It came under the care of the Marist Brothers in 1875. This marked a significant turning point in its development. The Marist Brothers brought their expertise and dedication. They greatly expanded the school’s curriculum and facilities.
By the 1880s Parramatta Marist High School was booming. A monastery was built alongside the school. A new headmaster Brother Claudius a Frenchman further steered the school’s growth. Enrollment soared to over 250 students. Senior classes were introduced and the school excelled in public examinations. Night and weekend classes were offered expanding access to education. A strong emphasis on sports developed especially rivalries with neighboring The King’s School.
The early 20th century saw more expansion. The original stone building was demolished and replaced. This new building served the junior school until 1994. However by the 1960s the school faced challenges. Enrollment exceeded 1000. Classes were held in unusual places. These included the parish hall verandas and even under an oak tree.
This prompted a decision. The secondary classes were moved to Westmead. The primary classes remained at the Parramatta site. The Westmead campus opened in 1966 marking another chapter in the school’s journey. This modern campus has continued to grow and evolve. New buildings including a monastery swimming pool library and science building have been added. The school also introduced Project Based Learning. This innovative approach to education emphasizes teamwork and collaboration. Parramatta Marist High School continues its proud legacy.
