High above the bustling city, Parque España offers a tranquil escape. Here in the Lomas del Guijarro neighborhood of Tegucigalpa, this park holds more than just beautiful views. It whispers a tale of international diplomacy and royal gratitude. Parque España, also known as Parque Alfonso XIII or Plaza de España, isn’t just a green space. It’s a living monument to a king’s decision that shaped the very borders of Honduras. The park’s centerpiece, a statue of King Alfonso XIII of Spain, gazes northward, a silent sentinel overlooking the city. This statue isn’t just a decorative element. It represents a pivotal moment in Honduran history. In 1906, a border dispute arose between Honduras and Nicaragua. King Alfonso XIII stepped in as arbitrator, his decision, known as the Laudo Alfonso XIII, ultimately defined the border along the Coco River. Parque España was built to honor this act of international diplomacy. The Honduran government, grateful for the king’s intervention, dedicated this space as a symbol of their appreciation. The statue itself was a gift from King Juan Carlos I of Spain in 1979. Imagine the scene on June 13, 1979. The Count of Barcelona, son of Alfonso XIII, and Honduran General Policarpo Paz García, president of the ruling military junta, stood here. Together they inaugurated the statue, solidifying the park’s place in the intertwined history of Honduras and Spain. Over the years, Parque España has seen renovations and renewals. In 2002, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation breathed new life into the park, ensuring its continued beauty. Today, Parque España stands as a testament to a king’s decision. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Tegucigalpa. From this vantage point, you can see the sprawling cityscape, a vibrant tapestry of neighborhoods stretching out before you. It’s a place to reflect on the past and appreciate the present, a peaceful oasis high above the city’s hum.
