Can you hear the whispers of the Atlantic Forest? Right here, at the edge of the sprawling metropolis of São Paulo, lies a hidden sanctuary. It’s the Parque Ecológico Várzea do Embu-Guaçu. This isn’t just a park. It is a testament to the power of nature’s resilience. Parque Ecológico Várzea do Embu-Guaçu opened its gates in 1997. It encompasses 129 hectares. Within this expanse, 80 hectares boast thriving native forest. The park is more than just trees. It cradles the Embu-Guaçu and Santa Rita rivers. These rivers contribute to the lifeblood of the Guarapiranga Reservoir, a vital source of water for the city. Parque Ecológico Várzea do Embu-Guaçu offers more than just a visual feast. It also holds a dedicated municipal nursery. This nursery cultivates native seedlings for restoring degraded areas and enhancing the urban landscape. Back in 2015, the nursery began a revitalization project. The goal was ambitious: to produce 20,000 seedlings annually. This includes a diverse range of species like ipê-roxo, ipê-amarelo, araucária, manacá, quaresmeira, juçara, paineira, ingá, aroeira, araçá, and pitanga. These seedlings help replenish the forest and bring splashes of color to the city. Imagine strolling along the suspended walkway built on stilts. Look around. You can admire the variety of flora and fauna. Ipês paint the landscape with vibrant hues. Figueiras, canelas, ingás, aroeiras, and quaresmeiras provide shelter for a rich array of birdlife. Taboas, carquejas, and grasses sway gently in the breeze. The air is filled with the songs of birds you might not see anywhere else in the city.
