Overgrown with nature’s embrace Parque do Carmo stands before you. A sprawling green lung in Sao Paulo’s bustling east side it’s more than just a park. It’s a living testament to history.

Originally the land belonged to Oscar Americano a wealthy landowner. His family sold it in the 1970s. The city transformed it into the Parque do Carmo. Playgrounds restrooms and barbecue areas were added. It officially opened on September 19 1976.

Thirteen years later it became an environmental protection area. In 2012 it was renamed Parque do Carmo Olavo Egydio Setubal honoring a former mayor who championed green spaces.

Americano’s original farmhouse remains. It’s now the Museum of the Environment. Inside you’ll find indigenous artifacts old Sao Paulo portraits and even skeletons of snakes and fish. A fascinating collection indeed.

But the park’s real star is the Professor Acacio Riberi Planetarium. One of the most modern in the world it projects 9100 stars the solar system and more. Imagine gazing at galaxies right here in Sao Paulo.

The park boasts diverse forests. One is a quiet reading space. Another famous for its cherry blossoms hosts a traditional festival. Thousands of cherry trees bloom beautifully between July and August. Sadly the pandemic paused the celebrations. But it’s expected to return in full glory. The monuments to Japanese immigration are cultural touchstones of the city.

Parque do Carmo also houses the Arthur Etzel Nursery. It grows plants for public spaces across Sao Paulo. This keeps the city green and flourishing.

The park’s infrastructure is impressive. It includes a metropolitan guard base parking an amphitheater natural fields sports equipment and more. Enjoy tranquil picnic areas and scenic lakes.

The flora and fauna are extraordinarily rich. There are many species of plants. Some even endangered. The park is a sanctuary for wildlife. There are birds reptiles and mammals. Imagine spotting a three-toed sloth. The park is a vibrant ecosystem. A slice of nature within the city.
