Tragedy transformed. That’s the story of Parque da Juventude. It’s a place of healing in São Paulo. Today the Parque da Juventude is a space for leisure and entertainment. But until 2002 this 240000 square meter area was the Carandiru Penitentiary. It was once Latin America’s largest prison complex.

The Carandiru prison is known for the 1992 massacre. 111 prisoners died. This event has been portrayed in music books and films. The Parque da Juventude stands in stark contrast to this dark history.

In 1999 the government held a public contest. It sought architectural designs for a new park. The winning design came from landscape architect Rosa Kliass. She worked with the firm Aflalo & Gasperini. Together they envisioned a space for recreation sports and culture.

The Parque da Juventude is divided into three sections. The Sports Area offers courts for various sports. There are also spaces for skating and rollerblading. The Central Area is for relaxation. It features trails gardens and walkways. Finally the Institutional Area is dedicated to culture. It houses the Biblioteca de São Paulo and an ETEC.

The Biblioteca de São Paulo is a major draw. It holds over 35000 titles. The library is part of the revitalization project. It occupies over 4000 square meters.

The park’s design incorporates remnants of the old prison. Ruins and structures were preserved. Decks connect these structures allowing visitors to walk through history. Old walls and guard towers remain as historical markers. The former watchtower is now a walkable area. It offers panoramic views.

The Parque da Juventude changed the landscape. It replaced a place of violence. Now it is a place of leisure for all ages. The park features green spaces and sports facilities. There is also a dog area and an open space for events.

The landscaping is a key feature. Trees create shaded spaces. The topography offers routes for walking. These elements contribute to the park’s unique atmosphere.

The park hosts a restaurant and a snack bar. Visitors can also picnic in designated areas. The Parque da Juventude offers something for everyone.

The creation of the Parque da Juventude was a symbolic act. It transformed a place of violence into a space for community. The park provides a space for recreation education and culture. Each month around 80000 people visit the Parque da Juventude. They come to enjoy the park’s many offerings. They find a space that was once filled with despair. Now it is a symbol of hope and renewal.
