Hidden within the bustling Butantã neighborhood of São Paulo, lies a secret oasis. It’s a place where the whispers of nature still echo. This is Parque da Fonte, a park brimming with untold potential. Parque da Fonte is more than just green space. It’s a testament to the power of community and the fight for preservation.
Parque da Fonte, also known as Parque da Fonte do Peabiru, is cradled by Rua Santanésia, Rua Padre Camilo, and Travessa da Fonte. This area is designated as a Special Zone of Environmental Protection. The park is a sanctuary for at least three distinct natural springs. Their revitalization has become a rallying cry for local residents. They have organized festivals and community events, all in support of Parque da Fonte.
The history of Parque da Fonte is a story of perseverance. As early as 1954, while the Morro do Querosene area in Vila Pirajussara was developing, the land for Parque da Fonte remained untouched, a vibrant patch of vegetation adjacent to Estrada de Itu. The movement to establish the park began in earnest around 2001, driven by the residents of Morro do Querosene. After years of advocacy and public consultations, a portion of the desired area, known as “Chácara da Fonte,” received landmark status from CONPRESP in 2012. This protected area spans an impressive 35,400 square meters.
The fight for Parque da Fonte continued into the 2020s. The ownership of the land was entangled in legal disputes. The city had agreed to pay R$ 5 million in compensation to the previous owners, but only R$ 2 million was disbursed due to significant fines levied against the former title holders. Even with these challenges, the community’s vision for Parque da Fonte persisted. In 2019, a student from the University of São Paulo’s Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism dedicated their thesis to designing a future for the park. The project envisioned a network of scenic overlooks and plazas, shaded by the lush canopy of the Atlantic Forest. Parque da Fonte continues to inspire, a symbol of hope for a greener future in the heart of São Paulo.
