A haven of green in Sao Paulo’s bustling west side. That’s Parque Chácara do Jockey.

This isn’t just any park. It’s a place with a rich history. It started life as a sprawling rural property. They called it Chácara do Ferreira. The Jockey Club of Sao Paulo bought it in 1946. It became a place to raise and train racehorses. Horses destined for the Cidade Jardim Hippodrome. For many years it was the home of the Clube Pequeninos do Jockey. This internationally acclaimed club nurtured young athletes. It produced Brazilian national team players. It also launched hundreds of other talented footballers into Paulista clubs.

The park wasn’t just for horses and footballers. Big name international acts played there. Radiohead The Killers Katy Perry and System of a Down all performed. Their concerts filled the air with music and excitement.

In 2014 the city government stepped in. They turned the property into a public park. This was after many years of requests from local residents. The city offset the cost of acquisition. They used the Jockey Club’s outstanding IPTU debt. This debt totaled approximately R$ 133 million.

Parque Chácara do Jockey opened in April 2016. It has 143500 square meters. The park provides space for sports culture leisure and education. There are football fields a skate park a multi-sports court and a playground. It also boasts 150 LED lights. The park offers a variety of green spaces. These include heterogeneous forests landscaped areas and lawns. It’s a haven for wildlife. Thirty-three species have been recorded. Twenty-nine are birds. Four are butterflies.

The park is divided into three sections. There’s the Sports Nucleus the Contemplative Nucleus and the Cultural Nucleus. The Cultural Nucleus is particularly impressive. It contains the largest and most complex set of buildings. These buildings are dedicated to culture and artistic initiatives. The area is a hub for creative production. It offers education and enjoyment of the arts.

Parque Chácara do Jockey is more than a park. It’s a testament to the power of community advocacy. It’s a place where history and recreation coexist. It’s a vibrant green space in the heart of a busy city. A place to enjoy a pleasant walk to relax or to take part in various activities. A real Sao Paulo treasure.
