Let us delve into the story of São Tiago. He is also known as Saint James the Greater. He was one of Jesus’s first apostles. Born in Galilee, he was the son of Zebedee and brother to John the Evangelist. Jesus called him and his brother to follow him while they were mending nets on their boat.
São Tiago was known for his fiery zeal. He preached the Gospel with such conviction that his words resonated like thunder. This earned him and his brother the nickname “Boanerges” or sons of thunder.
São Tiago was one of Jesus’s closest disciples. He witnessed key events such as the Transfiguration and the Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.
After Jesus’s ascension, São Tiago preached in Jerusalem and Judea. He then traveled to Spain to spread the Christian faith. Legend says that the Virgin Mary appeared to him in Zaragoza. She asked him to build a church in her honor. This became the famous Church of Our Lady of the Pillar.
