How about stepping back in time to 1932? That is when Paróquia São João Maria Vianney first opened its doors. Here in Sāo Paulo. It stands proudly in the Água Branca neighborhood.
The church is named for Saint John Vianney. He was a French priest also known as the Cure D’Ars. The Archbishop of Sāo Paulo wanted to honor him after a trip to France. He attended Vianney’s canonization festivities.
The land where Paróquia São João Maria Vianney stands was donated. Dr Paulo de Souza Queiróz and Dona Narcisa O de Souza Queiroz gave it. They had one condition. It had to be used for a church. A place where the residents of Água Branca could find spiritual help.
Construction began in 1927. By September 1931 the roof was done. The official opening was in April 1932. Father Alberto Pequeno gave the installation speech.
Initially, the church was part of other parishes. In October 1933 Paróquia São João Maria Vianney became its own parish. The area around the church has a strong Italian heritage. The church and Praça Cornélia became popular spots for locals. Today the square hosts an arts and crafts fair every Saturday.
The architecture of Paróquia São João Maria Vianney is primarily Baroque. Alexandre Albuquerque was the architect. The church aligns with the center of Praça Cornélia. Its facade has a rounded main section. Two circular sections flank it.
Inside Paróquia São João Maria Vianney there is a pipe organ. It was installed in 1956. For 15 years it sat unused. It was restored in 2015. The organ has 300 wooden pipes. It only has four registers. Once a renowned choir accompanied the organ. The Coral do Santo Cura D’ars had about 40 voices. Victor Barbieri directed it.
The church bell has a long history. For 81 years it rang before Sunday morning masses. In 2014 the church received a fine. The bell rang for 16 seconds too long. It also exceeded the noise limit.
The city protects Paróquia São João Maria Vianney. It wants to preserve the architectural heritage of the Lapa neighborhood.
Saint John Vianney was known for his holiness. People traveled from all over Europe to see him. They wanted to confess to him. They believed he had special gifts. Vianney died in 1859. His body remains in the church in Ars.
