Once upon a time, the land beneath Paroquia São João Batista belonged to João Alves de Siqueira. In 1858, he bequeathed it to a group of humble washerwomen. These women earned their living by the nearby stream. As years passed, the land became available. The Câmara Municipal considered building a fountain there in 1885. Carlos Augusto Bresser suggested a chapel instead. He believed it would greatly benefit the Catholic faithful.
The Câmara Municipal agreed. A commission was formed to oversee the chapel’s construction. Carlos Augusto Bresser, Comendador José Monteiro Pinheiro, and João Bohemer comprised the commission.
