“Here stands Paróquia São Geraldo Magella a testament to faith and resilience”

Our journey begins at Paróquia São Geraldo Magella a vibrant heart of Vila Guaraciaba. Imagine the bustling streets falling silent as we step inside. This isn’t just any church. This is a place steeped in history a place where the story of São Geraldo Magella unfolds.

São Geraldo born in Muro Lucano Italy in 1726 was a man of simple beginnings. His father an alfaiate died when Geraldo was just 14. The family fell into poverty. Young Geraldo worked tirelessly first in an alfaiataria then for a bishop. Despite facing hardship he dreamed of joining the Capuchin Order. His weak health however prevented this.

He found his calling with the Redemptorists. His path wasn’t easy. He persistently sought entry into their missionary group. His superior initially refused him. Undeterred Geraldo escaped his room at night climbing down from his window. He walked 19 kilometers to join them. His persistence won them over.

His initial label of “useless” was short-lived. São Geraldo quickly became invaluable. He excelled at various tasks gardening sewing and cooking. He even learned to carve crucifixes. His only ambition was to do God’s will.

In 1754 he was falsely accused of a terrible crime. He remained silent following his divine Master’s example. This silence led to a severe penance. He was forbidden from receiving communion. This was a profound hardship for him.

Later the accusations were proven false. Néria Caggiano confessed her lies. São Geraldo’s only reaction was to see God’s will fulfilled. He possessed extraordinary gifts including bilocation prophecy and visions. People sought his spiritual guidance. He even performed miracles including healing the sick and multiplying food for the poor.

São Geraldo’s humility was evident. He lived in a small convent cell where he wrote “Here God’s will is done as God wills when and for as long as He wills”. He died in 1755 of tuberculosis. His tomb quickly became a site of pilgrimage.

He was beatified in 1893 and canonized in 1904. São Geraldo Magella remains an inspiration. He is the patron saint of alfaiates expectant mothers and children. His legacy of faith charity and service to God continues to inspire the Paróquia São Geraldo Magella and all who enter its doors. Let us take a moment to reflect on his life.
