In 1647 the Paróquia São Francisco opened its doors. This wasn’t just any church. It was a cornerstone of São Paulo’s colonial past. Imagine Franciscan friars arriving from Bahia in 1639. They first settled near the Church of Saint Anthony. The location proved unhealthy. They relocated to Largo de São Francisco. There they built their convent and church a testament to their faith and perseverance.

The Paróquia São Francisco stands as a beautiful example of Baroque architecture. Its single nave and two ornate altarpieces are breathtaking. The rosewood choir stalls are exquisite. Sadly a fire in the late 19th century caused extensive damage. A new altarpiece from Germany replaced the original. The curved wooden ceiling now boasts paintings depicting the life of St Francis. These are recreations. The originals were destroyed in the 1880 fire.

The Paróquia São Francisco wasn’t just a place of worship. It was also a center of learning. In the 1820s the convent became the Academy of Social and Legal Sciences. This later evolved into the Law School of the University of São Paulo. The original convent building was demolished in 1933. A new neo-colonial style building replaced it. It reflects a fascinating shift from religious life to legal studies.

Next to the Paróquia São Francisco stands the Church of the Wounds of the Seraphic Father Saint Francis. It was built by the Secular Franciscan Order. The two churches together form a historically significant ensemble. They stand in Largo de São Francisco in the Historic Center of São Paulo.

In 1676 a chapel was built within the Franciscan church. This was for the brothers of the Secular Franciscan Order. Gradually expanded it became an independent temple. Its facade is attached to the convent church. It opened in 1787.

The Paróquia São Francisco stands proudly today. It’s a registered heritage site. A symbol of São Paulo’s rich history. Its transformation from a convent to a law school is remarkable. This reflects the city’s evolution. The Paróquia São Francisco is more than a church. It’s a living monument. It’s a story etched in stone and wood. It invites us to reflect on faith perseverance and the enduring legacy of a vibrant city.
