The Paróquia Santo Antônio e Nossa Senhora do Carmo wasn’t built overnight. It’s a testament to perseverance in the face of adversity. Father Olivio José Bedin a visionary priest started it all. He sought to serve the poor in Vila Paulistana a neighborhood in São Paulo’s north zone. This was during a turbulent time in Brazil’s history. The 1968 AI-5 decree suppressed human rights. Yet Father Olivio remained steadfast. He found solace in the Medellín Conference’s message of liberation theology. It inspired him to work for the marginalized.
A small chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Carmo already existed since 1955. It was started by Portuguese families. It was a humble beginning. But the community yearned for more a true parish. Father Olivio despite facing threats and risks. He celebrated Mass organized community groups. He fostered the growth of Base Ecclesial Communities CEBs. It all happened in this location.
The community’s dedication impressed Archbishop Dom Paulo Evaristo Arns. He recognized their need for a parish. The parish was officially established on May 14 1972. Father Olivio became its first pastor. A new church replaced the old one. This was an era of profound social change. The parish became a beacon of hope. It supported human rights during a dictatorship. The parish even established a human rights center.
