Something miraculous happened here centuries ago. That is at Paróquia Santo Antonio. It is a Catholic temple. It stands in the center of São Paulo in Patriarca Square.
Paróquia Santo Antonio is the oldest remaining church in the city. Its origins trace back to 1592. Imagine this small chapel standing at the end of Direita Street. Unknown worshippers erected it.
In 1638, the chapel underwent its first renovation. The following year Franciscan friars arrived in São Paulo. They settled in the chapel. They maintained it even after building their convent.
By 1717, the chapel needed more space. Bishop Dom Bernardo Rodrigues Nogueira led another renovation. Devotees helped. The expanded chapel became a church.
In 1747, another renovation took place. In 1774, the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary of White Men took over. They transformed the church into their headquarters. They altered the facade.
A fire damaged Paróquia Santo Antonio in 1891. It came from a neighboring building. In 1899, the city ordered a rebuild of the tower and facade. This was due to street alignment work. Francisco Xavier Pais de Barros and the Count of Prates financed the work. Both lived nearby. The work included a general refurbishment. The church reopened in 1919. It had a new eclectic-style facade.
Despite many changes, the church retains its historical importance. In 1970, it became a landmark site. The Council for the Defense of Historical, Archaeological, Artistic and Tourist Heritage did this. In 1991, another fire damaged the back of the building.
Restoration work began in 2005. During repairs, workers found layers of paint and carvings. These covered the altar’s original paintings. The 20th-century carvings were removed. The 17th-century paintings of angels were renovated. The altar now shows the Baroque colors of São Paulo. These are red, yellow, and gold. A 17th-century painting survived the fires. It was on the ceiling of the high altar. The restorers removed layers of paint and repaired the picture.
The church has undergone a complete restoration since 2019. The project includes renovating the foundations. It also addresses electrical and plumbing systems. The bells in the tower will be repaired. The interior is also being renovated. The wooden ceiling, stained glass windows, floors, and facade are also being restored.
Santo Antonio was born in Lisbon in 1195. He is known as the protector of lost things. He also protects marriages and the poor. People consider him a saint of miracles. He died in Padua on June 13, 1231. His feast day is June 13. On this day, people go to his chapel to make vows. They also receive blessed bread. This tradition has continued since 1920.
The interior of Paróquia Santo Antonio holds treasures. It holds important examples of art from colonial São Paulo. In 2005, restoration revealed 17th-century mural paintings. They were of high quality. The main altar dates back to 1780. It is a beautiful example of Baroque carving.
The church stands as a testament to faith and history. It has survived fires and renovations. Paróquia Santo Antonio remains a vital part of São Paulo.
