The Paróquia Santo Afonso story began in 1924, thanks to the vision of missionaries Francis John Mohr, Alphonse Hild, and Wilian Fee. The church itself, however, wasn’t completed until over a decade later. Construction began in 1932, led by builder Luiz Louzinha under the guidance of Redemptorist priests. The doors of Paróquia Santo Afonso finally opened in 1935, welcoming worshippers into its embrace.
The church’s architecture is a captivating blend of neo-Romanesque inspiration and eclectic elements. The concrete and stone foundation supports a structure of striking visual appeal. The gray facade, often contrasted against the winter sky, gives it a timeless quality. The rose window, positioned high on the central nave, casts colorful patterns onto the interior.
Originally, the Paróquia Santo Afonso was part of a larger complex. The current Paço Municipal once served as the parish house, a place of rest for the priests. A nearly subterranean level, now used for storage, once housed the nuns. The church’s interior has undergone transformations over the years. For a period, the original vibrant paintings were covered, giving the interior a more conventional appearance. However, in 2008, the Redemptorist priests returned and initiated a restoration project. With the help of architects and computer technology, the original paint colors were painstakingly rediscovered and revived. Today, the interior of Paróquia Santo Afonso is once again a spectacle of color. Small paintings depicting the Stations of the Cross adorn the walls, accompanied by statues of the Holy Family. The original 1930s confessionals remain, silent witnesses to countless whispered secrets. High above, the original bells still ring, their ropes pulled by hand.
