On a crisp morning in 1896, the cornerstone for Paróquia Santana was laid. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in the district’s history, a testament to the growing devotion to Saint Anne. Paróquia Sant’Ana stands as a symbol of resilience and faith in the heart of São Paulo. Its story intertwines with the very history of the city, from its Jesuit origins to its modern-day vibrancy. The original Sant’Ana Farm, owned by the Society of Jesus, was a vital green space in early São Paulo. Mentioned in 1560 by Father José de Anchieta, the farm later became a seminary and even a smallpox hospital. The historical significance of the building housing Paróquia Santana is profound. It’s even rumored that José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva, a key figure in Brazilian independence, drafted the “Dia do Fico” document within its walls. This document, written in 1822, declared Brazil’s separation from Portugal. The current church building wasn’t without its challenges. Construction began in 1906 under Father Clemente Moussier, but was halted in 1914 due to economic hardship caused by World War I. Six years later, work resumed, finally completing the towers and interior under Fathers André Duguet and Francisco Amos Connor. Paróquia Santana’s history is filled with fascinating details. During renovations, an image of Saint Anne from the original Jesuit chapel was unearthed, reigniting the local devotion. The parish’s first decree was signed in 1895 by Cardinal Joaquim Arcoverde de Albuquerque Cavalcante, officially separating it from the Church of Santa Ifigênia. A lesser-known fact is the contribution of sculptor Artur Pederzoli, who crafted numerous pieces for the church, including the statue of Sant’Ana on the main altar. Paróquia Santana has been served by numerous dedicated priests throughout its history. From the Saletin missionaries in the early 20th century to the diocesan priests of the Archdiocese of São Paulo, their leadership has shaped the parish into the vibrant community it is today.
