Picture this a humble chapel rising amidst the bustling streets of Sao Paulo. This is the Paroquia Santa Teresinha a testament to faith and resilience. Built in 1927 this church stands as a beacon of hope in the Santa Teresinha neighborhood. It wasn’t always grand.

The story begins long before the church’s construction. Around 1918 Salesians acquired a farm in the Alto de Santana area specifically in the Chora Menino neighborhood. They built a football field and a shed for students from the Liceu Coracao de Jesus. The students enjoyed the fresh air a valuable asset after the devastating Spanish flu pandemic. This farm would later become the site of the Paroquia Santa Teresinha.

In 1924 construction began on the Igreja Votiva de Santa Teresinha. This was a fulfillment of a vow made by Father Luiz Marcigaglia during the Revolution of 1924. It started as a small chapel later elevated to the status of a parish church in 1940. This humble beginning reflects the deep-rooted faith of the community.

Interestingly the neighborhood itself took the name Santa Teresinha in 1934 after a part of Chora Menino was renamed. This church wasn’t just a place of worship. It became the heart of a growing community. It served as the anchor for the later establishment of the Salesian Colegio Santa Teresinha in 1937. Then came the Instituto Madre Mazzarello in 1955 further cementing the religious influence on the area.

Today the Paroquia Santa Teresinha stands as a symbol of enduring faith and community spirit. It is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to the unwavering devotion of the people of Sao Paulo. The church’s humble beginnings and its growth alongside the neighborhood create a rich tapestry of history. It continues to serve its community offering solace and guidance. The Paroquia Santa Teresinha stands tall a symbol of hope and faith in the heart of Sao Paulo. You can almost feel the history in these walls.
