“A phoenix from the ashes,” whispered an elderly woman beside me, her eyes fixed on Paróquia Santa Teresinha do Menino Jesus. Her words sparked my curiosity, drawing me into the story of this remarkable church. Paróquia Santa Teresinha do Menino Jesus wasn’t always the beautiful structure we see today. It began humbly in the 1960s, born from the faith of families in the Jardim Sydney neighborhood. Initially connected to Nossa Senhora do Retiro Parish, it gradually grew, adding structures built through community effort and fundraising. In 1995, it was officially established as Paróquia Santa Teresinha do Menino Jesus. However, years of piecemeal construction took their toll. By 2017, the church was literally falling apart. Leaky roofs, precarious electrical wiring, and a looming risk of fire made a renovation urgent. The initial plan was a simple renovation. But the reality was far more complex. The structure was too weak to support mere repairs. A complete reconstruction was necessary. Paróquia Santa Teresinha do Menino Jesus had to be, essentially, reborn. The restoration project began in 2018. Services temporarily relocated to a local school. By 2019, activities gradually returned to the church as it took shape. The COVID-19 pandemic delayed the grand reopening and the parish’s 25th-anniversary celebrations. But finally, in 2022, Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer dedicated the newly rebuilt Paróquia Santa Teresinha do Menino Jesus and its altar. Architect Milena Pereira envisioned a blend of beauty and functionality, drawing inspiration from Gothic and medieval church architecture. The arched ceiling connects the church to the heavens, while the suspended crucifix emphasizes the core of Christian faith. Natural light floods the space, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The church now stands as a testament to the community’s faith and resilience, a phoenix truly risen from the ashes.
