“A Santinha,” a small statue of Saint Agnes, journeyed from Hungary. She arrived in São Paulo in 1949, a gift to the Cadima family from the Colégio Santa Inês in Bom Retiro. Paróquia Santa Inês wouldn’t exist yet for almost another decade. But this small statue played a vital role in its creation. The Cadima family cherished “A Santinha.” In 1950, inspired by her presence, they envisioned a cross standing tall where Paróquia Santa Inês now stands. This idea blossomed in 1953. Brita Rocha generously donated the land. On June 7th, 1953, a cross was erected and blessed with an open-air mass led by Bishop Paulo Rolim Loureiro. The story of Paróquia Santa Inês continued to unfold. In 1957, a larger statue of Saint Agnes arrived, a gift from João and Adelaide Morais. Then, a pivotal moment arrived. On February 11, 1958, Bishop Carlos Carmelo de Vasconcellos Mota officially established Paróquia Santa Inês. In May of that year, Bishop Loureiro blessed the cornerstone of the future church. Seven years passed, a testament to dedication and patience. The small “Santinha” remained with the Cadima family. She watched over the community, a symbol of hope. Finally, in 1966, Paróquia Santa Inês opened its doors. “A Santinha” was moved to her rightful place within the church. Father Lourenço Lemay celebrated the first mass. Paróquia Santa Inês, born from a small statue and the dreams of a community, continues to serve São Paulo to this day.
