Was there ever a more fitting name than Parelheiros for the district cradling Paróquia Santa Cruz? We stand before Paróquia Santa Cruz, a church whose story is interwoven with the very fabric of this unique district. The church’s roots reach back to 1898, a testament to the enduring faith of the early settlers. Parelheiros, you see, translates to “horse racers”. It earned this name from the parallel racetracks that once drew crowds to this very spot. The area thrived, bustling with the energy of competition and community. And at the heart of it all stood a humble chapel, the precursor to the Paróquia Santa Cruz we see today. This wasn’t just any chapel. It was born from a promise. Amaro Pontes, a young man heading off to the Paraguayan War, pledged to God that if he returned alive, he would donate his land for a chapel. He survived the war, returned home, and true to his word, donated nine alqueires of his land to Santa Cruz. The original chapel was a simple structure, a “cobertinha de sapé” (a small thatched roof covering) with a prominent cross. Eventually, this evolved into a wooden chapel with an open front. This chapel was the spiritual heart of a community built by German immigrants who arrived in 1827. These families, the Reimbergs, Kleins, Hessels, and others, faced tremendous hardship. They carved a life out of the wilderness, with little more than hope and their faith. Their journey to attend mass was an arduous trek through the Serra do Mar to Itanhaém. They adapted, they “acaboclando”, integrating into the Brazilian culture. Their traditions and even their language began to fade. But their faith remained a constant. The official founding of Paróquia Santa Cruz came much later, in 1980. But its spiritual foundation had been laid decades earlier by these resilient pioneers. The church we see now is the result of years of growth, change, and dedication. It stands as a symbol of the community’s enduring spirit, a testament to the promise made by a young soldier, and a vibrant part of the rich tapestry of Parelheiros. Paróquia Santa Cruz isn’t just a building. It’s a living story, echoing with the whispers of the past and the hopes of the future.
