A royal decree on September 15, 1796, formalized the split. Queen Dona Maria I of Portugal oversaw the decision. This led to the creation of Nossa Senhora do Ó. It stood on the site of an old farm. The farm belonged to Manoel Preto and Agueda Rodrigues. In 1615 they got permission to build a chapel. It honored Nossa Senhora da Esperança.
