Did you know that Paróquia Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Aclimação began with a gift from another city? In 1939 Recife offered São Paulo an image of Nossa Senhora do Carmo. This act of generosity occurred during the III Congresso Eucarístico Nacional. The story of this church is rooted in community spirit.
Now we stand before the Paróquia Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Aclimação. It’s a place of faith and history. Dom José Gaspar de Affonseca e Silva established this parish on November 13 1939. He was the Metropolitan Archbishop of São Paulo.
Gustavo Olynto de Aquino and Elyria Matos do Amaral donated the land. Elyria was the widow of Dr. Mário do Amaral. The land was specifically for the image of N. Sra. do Carmo.
Mons. Ernesto de Paula declared the Paróquia Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Aclimação installed on December 31 1939. He was the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of São Paulo. Pe. Cícero Revoredo became its first Vicar.
The cornerstone of the new temple was laid on July 14 1940. A provisional chapel was installed by May 31 1942. It was in the basement of the construction. This space housed the small image. Before this the community gathered at the Capela da Santa Cruz dos Inocentes. It was on Rua Albina Barbosa. From there the parish community truly began. Groups organized pastoral activities.
The completed temple opened on October 29 1960. Mons. Manoel Salvador de Carvalho Neves guided the church. In 1994 he celebrated his Golden Jubilee in Aclimação.
Celebrating its 70th anniversary the church received a new image of Nossa Senhora. Unlike the first image from Recife this one came from Rome. It carried the blessings of the Pope. Both images are cherished. They represent the same Mother of God.
Many priests have served at Paróquia Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Aclimação. They marked the community with their dedication. The parish also thanks the many laypeople. Families and young people formed the foundation. They continue with God’s grace.
Currently Padre Vando Valentini leads the parish. He was born in Fermo Italy on November 10 1949. Before coming to Paróquia Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Aclimação he served at the Paróquia Imaculado Coração de Maria. It is also known as Capela da PUC.
Masses are held regularly. Online options are also available. During vacation periods the schedule changes. On weekdays masses are at 5:30 PM. Saturday mass is at 3:00 PM. Sunday masses are at 8:00 AM 10:00 AM 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
May Jesus reward all those connected to this parish. This is through the intercession of Nossa Senhora do Carmo. Both those who have passed and those still active are remembered.
The architecture may seem simple. Yet the homilies by Cônega Sérgio and Padre Fernando are exceptional. They offer meaningful and pleasant reflections.
