A humble garage. That’s where the story of Paróquia Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe begins. In the heart of Campo Belo, São Paulo, long before the towering church we see today, there was a simple garage filled with faith. It was the 1950s. The area was sparsely populated with small farms and homes. The devoted Padre Newton José Crippa, the parish’s first vicar, held mass in that very garage. An image of Nossa Senhora Aparecida would travel from house to house, a beacon for the faithful during their evening rosary prayers. The dream of a dedicated church building began to take shape. Land was acquired. The desire for a proper place of worship for the growing community intensified. Bishop Dom Paulo Rolim Loureiro had a vision. He wanted a parish in every neighborhood, a spiritual anchor for the people. He also held a special devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe. On August 15, 1955, before a crowd of hopeful parishioners, Bishop Loureiro and Padre Crippa blessed the cornerstone of the first Paróquia Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe. As fate would have it, a famous Mexican Friar, José Francisco de Guadalupe Mojica, was passing through São Paulo. A former actor turned devout follower of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Friar Mojica eagerly celebrated the first mass on the newly blessed ground just a week later. The Paróquia Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe in Campo Belo was officially born. A small, cozy church was built. It was a testament to the community’s faith. It was a place where the faithful could gather and feel the presence of Our Lady. A unique icon of the Virgin of Guadalupe was gifted to Padre Crippa. It was presented by Brazilian athletes returning from the first Pan-American Games in Mexico City. This icon would later survive a devastating fire that consumed the original church in 1970. Only the tower remained, standing as a reminder of the parish’s beginnings. The baptistery also survived. You can still see it in the garden today, a tangible link to the past. The parish didn’t give up. A new, modern church arose under the leadership of Padre Paulo Homero Gozzi. Built with the dedication and support of the community, the new church embodied their unwavering faith. Many have passed through the doors of Paróquia Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, each leaving their mark. The church may seem small compared to the growing community. Yet, within its walls, the love of Our Lady of Guadalupe continues to embrace all who seek solace and connection.
