“A flicker of candlelight, a beacon of hope.” So begins the story of Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Candelária, a vibrant testament to faith nestled in São Paulo’s Vila Maria district. Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Candelária’s story ignites on December 17, 1933. The church’s first vicar, Father Fernando Baumhoff, a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Congregation (Dehonians), laid the foundation for this spiritual haven. Initial masses echoed within the humble walls of the Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes Chapel. Then in February 1935, a new, albeit temporary, church building received its blessing. This marked a pivotal moment for Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Candelária. It was here that the first baptism was performed, solidifying its role as the main church of the area. The current church structure, a testament to enduring faith, began to take shape in 1941 under Father José Bollinger. By April 1952, the still-under-construction building, now covered and offering greater comfort, began hosting Sunday masses. At the heart of Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Candelária stands a magnificent image of Our Lady of Candelária. A figure of the Virgin Mary, clad in white and a blue mantle, cradling the infant Jesus. Both figures hold a candle, symbolizing the light they bring to the world. The image connects to the legend of the devotion’s origin in the Canary Islands. This particular image, standing 2.75 meters tall, was carved from wood by Artur Pederzoli and enthroned in the new church on December 19, 1954. It replaced an earlier depiction of the Virgin Mary with a rosary, which lacked the symbolic candles. Every year, on February 2nd, the community gathers to celebrate Our Lady of Candelária, a vibrant testament to their enduring faith. Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Candelária is more than just a church. It’s a cornerstone of the Vila Maria community. A place where generations have been baptized, confirmed, and married. It stands as a beacon of hope. A testament to the enduring power of faith. A place where candlelight flickers. Stories are shared. And the spirit of community burns bright.
