A humble beginning. That’s how the story of Paróquia Matriz de São Benedito began. This unassuming church in São Paulo stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community.
In 1759 a simple structure arose. Built of taipa rammed earth a beaten-earth floor and a thatched roof. Indigenous people helped build the first temple. It was dedicated to São Benedito a saint revered by many. Eighty years later in 1841 a more modern dwelling was erected. Father Filipe Benício from Viçosa do Ceará assisted with its construction.
São Benedito inspired the creation of the present church. Father João Cristóstomo de Oliveira Freire championed the idea. Work commenced on August 23 1850. The inaugural event took place on December 22 1851. On August 6 1874 Provincial Law 1600 established the parish.
Paróquia Matriz de São Benedito underwent significant renovations. Some columns were removed making it more functional. Throughout its history São Benedito has had fourteen parish priests and numerous assistant vicars. The church’s history is one of adaptation and growth. A history of faith and resilience.
