Contemplate the story of a humble image. It began with fishermen and now resides within Paróquia Imaculada Conceição Aparecida. This church in São Paulo shares a deep connection to the tale of Nossa Senhora Aparecida.

Paróquia Imaculada Conceição Aparecida stands as a testament to faith. Its roots trace back to the miraculous discovery of the Virgin Mary’s image. The story began in October 1717. Dom Pedro Miguel de Almeida Portugal e Vasconcelos was passing through Guaratinguetá. The local people planned a celebration. Three fishermen were tasked to catch fish for the event.

Domingos Garcia, João Alves, and Filipe Pedroso cast their nets. Fishing was poor that day. They prayed to the Virgin Mary for help. After many unsuccessful attempts they moved downriver. João Alves pulled up the body of an image without a head. He cast his net again. This time he found the head. It fit the body perfectly. One fisherman exclaimed: “É a imagem da Imaculada Conceição!”.

Their nets soon overflowed with fish. It was so much that their boat almost sank. This event was seen as the first miracle attributed to the Virgin Mary. For fifteen years the image stayed in Filipe Pedroso’s home. Neighbors gathered to pray.

Devotion to the Santa grew. Many graces were received by those who prayed. The family built an oratory at Porto Itaguaçu. It quickly became too small for the growing number of faithful. Around 1734 the vicar of Guaratinguetá built a chapel. It was on top of Morro dos Coqueiros. Filipe Pedroso’s sons helped.

Over time a village formed around the church. It became the municipality of Aparecida in 1928. This was in honor of Nossa Senhora. Pope Pius XI declared Nossa Senhora Aparecida the Queen and Patroness of Brazil. This happened on July 16 1930.

A larger place of worship was needed. Construction of the Basílica Nova began in 1955. Architect Benedito Calixto designed it. In 1967 Pope Paul VI gifted the “Rosa de Ouro”. This was to mark 250 years of devotion. Pope Benedict XVI repeated the gesture in 2007. Pope John Paul II dedicated the Basílica in 1980. It is the largest Marian sanctuary in the world.

Countless miracles are attributed to Nossa Senhora Aparecida. You can see them in the Milagres room at the Santuário de Aparecida. A law in 1980 officially made October 12 a holiday. The Republic recognizes Nossa Senhora Aparecida as the Patroness of Brazil.

The Paróquia Imaculada Conceição Aparecida embodies this history. It stands as a beacon of faith. It is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição Aparecida.

Paróquia Imaculada Conceição Aparecida continues to celebrate this devotion. It was founded on 12/10/2001. Padre Cristiano de Souza Costa is the Páraco. The church address is Rua João Gois 185 Jardim Lídia. You can attend services here. Visit on Saturdays at 4 PM or Sundays at 6 PM. The church’s creation on December 2 2021 signifies its ongoing role.
