Atop a hill, overlooking the sprawling city of São Paulo, stands the Paróquia e Santuário Nossa Senhora do Sagrado Coração. This majestic sanctuary, a beacon of faith, has witnessed the ebb and flow of life in Vila Formosa since its humble beginnings. The Paróquia e Santuário Nossa Senhora do Sagrado Coração wasn’t always the grand structure you see today. In the late 1930s, the parish began its life in a small chapel near what is now Praça Sampaio Vidal. The first part of the sanctuary, from the front to the tower, began construction in 1945. Imagine the sight of this immense structure rising against the skyline, visible from all sides of the surrounding hills. The second part of the sanctuary followed just a few years later, in 1949-1950. With the removal of the dividing wall between the two sections, the vast interior space was revealed for the first time. The hill on which Paróquia e Santuário Nossa Senhora do Sagrado Coração stands became known as “Colina Sagrada” (Sacred Hill). It shares the same elevation as the Praça da Sé’s marker zero. A brass seal in front of the tower marks this level, preserved and protected by the city of São Paulo. The church’s architecture is steeped in Christian symbolism. Columns, windows, stairs, arches, each element carefully designed to reflect faith. If you visit during the week, from Tuesday to Friday, the offices are open from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
