Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? Here before us stands the Paroquia Assunção de Nossa Senhora a testament to faith and resilience in the heart of São Paulo. This isn’t just any church. It’s a story woven into the very fabric of this city’s past.
The Paroquia Assunção de Nossa Senhora isn’t just a building. It’s a culmination of dreams and dedication. Its origins trace back to the early 20th century. A generous donation of land by the Matarazzo family. This land became the foundation for the Colegio Assunção in 1933. A school built by the Congregation of the Assumption nuns. They came bearing a blueprint. A replica of a 12th-century Belgian monastery chapel.
Architect Adolfo Lindenberg designed the school. The chapel however a later addition. Benedito Calixto Neto designed it. He’s also known for his work on the Basilica of Aparecida. This architectural masterpiece a blend of styles mainly Romanesque. Its solid sturdy exterior gives way to a simple welcoming interior. Arched ceilings and irregular granite columns soften the space.
But the story doesn’t end with the architecture. On the left side near the altar is a special chapel. It holds a beautiful image of Saint Mary Eugenia of Jesus. She founded the Congregation of the Assumption. Her canonization in 2007 by Pope Benedict XVI marked a significant moment. A culmination of years of devotion and service.
The Paroquia Assunção de Nossa Senhora became a parish in 1967. Cardinal Agnelo Rossi established it. The chapel of the Colegio Assunção became its church. Since then many priests have served this community. Each adding their own chapter to this ongoing story of faith. Father Juarez Pedro de Castro the current pastor continues this legacy.
Look closely at the church’s tower. It rises above the surrounding buildings a beacon of hope. The church’s grounds cover 18000 square meters.
