Built for displaced people and those seeking housing Parksiedlung in Ostfildern near Stuttgart began in 1956. It was a bold project. Architect Dr-Ing Karl Georg Siegler envisioned a green residential area. He wanted to create a community nestled in nature. The project was named Weiler Park initially. It later became Parksiedlung.
Over 417 hectares the community blossomed. By 1970 over 1000 housing units were finished. These included apartments row houses and even villas. Shops churches kindergartens and a school were also constructed. It quickly became a vibrant place to live. People from all walks of life found homes here.
Parksiedlung reached its peak population in 1971. It had 4200 residents. This was due to rapid construction and a high demand for housing. However population declined in later years. Many adult children moved away. Older generations remained. This created a demographic shift.
Renovations and a generational change reversed the trend. The population increased again. By 2020 it was nearly 3000. The community remained strong. It proved its resilience.
The Parksiedlung is well connected. It has four public transport stops. The bus lines 122 and 130/131 serve the area. Since 2000 a light rail line stops near Parksiedlung. This connects it to the wider Stuttgart network. A night bus line N22 runs on weekends. This links Esslingen to Fildern.
There is even a local citizen’s association. The Bürgerverein Parksiedlung was founded in 1987. It is a strong voice for the community. Another project is Wir in der Parksiedlung. This focuses on neighborhood development.
Parksiedlung’s history is one of adaptation. It went from a planned housing development to a self-sufficient community. It overcame challenges. It remains a cherished part of Ostfildern. Its story is a testament to human resilience and community spirit.
