Pray tell, have you heard the story of Parkdale United Church? It stands here at 171 Dunn Avenue. It is more than just a building. It’s a testament to community and faith.
Let’s journey back to 1876. William Luxton Essery, a local preacher, started prayer meetings. They were held at Thomas Abbs’ home. This home was at Cowan and Queen. Parkdale was quite remote then. No sidewalks existed. Transportation was scarce. The community needed a place to gather. A church was built on Queen Street near Close Avenue. It opened in February 1878. Soon after, it joined the Methodist Church of Canada.
The congregation grew quickly. A new church was needed. So, they chose a spot on Cowan Avenue. This was west of Melbourne. This new Parkdale United Church opened on April 4th, 1886. Hart Massey laid the cornerstone on October 17th, 1889. That very cornerstone is now in the narthex wall of the present church. The first service was held on the last Sunday in June 1890.
Parkdale United Church’s Sunday School became one of Canada’s largest. In 1897, it had 1,263 scholars. In the first-floor hallway, see the panel of photographs. A graduating class gave it to their teachers in 1899. Five stained-glass windows were unveiled on June 7th, 1925. These windows have been lovingly preserved. That year was significant. Presbyterians, Methodists, and Congregationalists joined together. They formed the United Church of Canada.
The church became a Parkdale landmark. A huge red neon cross hung over King Street. It shone brightly. By the early 1970s, the old church needed major repairs. Also, the congregation had dwindled. A new federal government program emerged. The present building was constructed in 1976. It opened in November 1977. It provides housing for single people. The church facilities are in the basement and first floor. These spaces serve congregations and community groups.
In 1973, the Parkdale United Church Foundation was founded. The congregation wanted to serve marginalized community members better. In 1976, the Foundation developed the Green Phoenix apartments. This is a not-for-profit housing complex. It’s at the corner of King Street and Dunn Avenue. For decades, it has provided affordable housing.
