Who knew a stroll through Parkdale–High Park could unearth so much history? This Toronto neighborhood, nestled west of downtown, has seen a lot. Parkdale–High Park wasn’t always the vibrant mix of cultures and incomes we see today. It began in the 1850s as a separate settlement within York County. Imagine, in 1879, Parkdale–High Park officially became a village. It wasn’t until 1889 that it joined Toronto. This area, bordered by Roncesvalles Avenue, Dufferin Street, the CP Rail line, and Lake Ontario, was once a playground for Toronto’s elite. Grand Victorian mansions dotted the landscape, offering stunning views of the lake. Think of the bustling Sunnyside Amusement Park, a major attraction from 1922 until its demolition to make way for the Gardiner Expressway. That expressway, built between 1955 and 1964, dramatically altered Parkdale–High Park. It severed the neighborhood’s connection to the lake and led to the demolition of 170 houses. This period of disruption brought significant changes, including an influx of apartment buildings and a shift in demographics. Parkdale–High Park became a haven for newcomers to Canada. Waves of immigrants from the Caribbean, India, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Tibet, among others, have all found a home here. In fact, Parkdale–High Park boasts one of the largest Tibetan communities outside of India and Nepal, earning it the nickname “Little Tibet.” This rich history has shaped Parkdale–High Park into the unique neighborhood it is today. From a posh lakeside retreat to a hub for new beginnings, Parkdale–High Park continues to evolve while holding onto its vibrant spirit.
