“Segregation is wrong.” That’s the resounding message echoing from the grounds of Park View Recreation Center. This center stands as a testament to change in the Park View neighborhood. It offers programs for children and teens plus fitness programs for adults.

Park View Recreation Center is at 693 Otis Place NW. It is in Ward 1 of Washington D.C. The nearest Metro station is Petworth. You can reach it via the Green and Yellow lines. If you drive, street parking is available. The center is open Monday to Friday from 12 noon to 8 pm. It is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. You can contact them directly at 202-671-2186.

In the early 20th century, Park View began as an all-white neighborhood. Despite restrictive housing covenants, African Americans started moving in. By the late 1940s, Park View was majority African American. However, its elementary school and playground remained whites-only. The playground is across the street from the school.

Community demand led the DC Department of Recreation to act. In 1948, they reluctantly implemented a split-use plan for Park View Playground. During school hours, it was whites-only. After 3:00 pm, it opened to Black children.

As more African Americans moved in, Park View Elementary became an African American school in 1949. Yet, white children continued to use the playground. The Board of Recreation recognized the growing community sentiment. They understood Park View should serve all people. In May 1952, they officially desegregated this playground. Two years later, segregation ended at all DC playgrounds.

Today, Park View Recreation Center has a variety of amenities. Indoors, there’s a computer lab, a kitchen and a multi-purpose room. Outdoors, you will find a basketball court and a children’s pool that is open during summer. There is also fitness equipment plus picnic shelters and tables. Kids can play on the shaded, nature-based playground. There is also a synthetic turf soccer pitch and a walking or running track.

The Park View Field House is on the site of Park View Recreation Center. It’s a one-and-a-half-story Colonial Revival style building built in 1932.

Take a moment to appreciate Park View Recreation Center. It is more than just a place for recreation. It is a symbol of progress and a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of equality.
