Did you know Park View High School in Sterling Virginia wasn’t always a high school? It started its life in 1976. Back then it served the entire Sterling Park and Sugarland areas. The school boasted state-of-the-art facilities. A large auditorium and a two-level library earned it the nickname “University of Park View”. This was in the years after it opened. Park View’s early days were a time of growth. Eastern Loudoun County experienced a population boom in the 1980s and 1990s. This meant many students started attending other high schools. Potomac Falls High School opened in 1997. Dominion High School opened in 2003. Both drew students away from Park View.

Major renovations took place between 2002 and 2004. The library moved to the first floor and expanded. New classrooms were added on the second floor. The main and guidance offices were reconstructed. A new senior courtyard was built. A stunning foyer was added to the front of the building. In 2005 the auditorium received a major facelift. It features new seating a new curtain and updated theater systems. In 2017 the school added new furniture and charging stations.

Park View’s history isn’t without its challenges. In 2014 a senior prank involved vandalism. The graffiti included explicit images and profane language. It angered parents and school staff. In 2015 a tragedy occurred. Student Danny Centeno-Miranda was shot and killed on his way to school. Three people were charged with his murder. A controversy arose in 2018 concerning a donation from the Redskins to build a turf field. The school’s football program had been canceled due to low participation and a lack of funds. The community responded negatively to the donation. Actress and Park View alumna Hilarie Burton donated to help restore the football program. More recently in 2023 nine students overdosed on fentanyl. Four overdoses happened on school property. The school and Loudoun County officials delayed informing parents about this for almost three weeks. This prompted Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin to issue an executive order. It mandated schools notify parents of overdoses within 24 hours. Park View High School a place of learning and growth but also a place with a rich and sometimes complex history.
