How often do you find a park named after a charity worker? Today we are visiting Park Marka Kotańskiego. It is a green space dedicated to a remarkable man.
Park Marka Kotańskiego is located in Warsaw’s Włochy district. Before 2008 this area was just an unnamed open space. In 2008 it was transformed into a park.
Marek Kotański was a Polish charity worker. He campaigned for disadvantaged people. Among those were the homeless and people with HIV. Kotański died in a car accident in 2002.
Kotański was a psychologist and psychotherapist. He organized projects to fight social problems. He helped alcoholics, drug addicts, people with HIV, ex-prisoners, and the homeless. He created organizations like Monar and Markot.
Born in Warsaw during World War II Kotański’s mother Ludwika was a painter. His father Wiesław was a Japanese language professor. Their house was open to everyone needing help.
Already in high school, Kotański helped people in need. From 1960 he studied psychology at Warsaw University. After his studies he worked in a psychiatric hospital. He was active in anti-alcoholism and abstinence movements.
In 1974 Kotański worked at a psychiatric hospital in Garwolin. He started a therapy group for drug addicts. This therapy group became known as “community”. He also started the healing system “Monar”. The first Monar center opened in 1978.
Kotański also organized settlements for people with HIV or AIDS. He started the association Solidarni Plus. From 1985 to 1994 he organized “Chain of Pure Hearts”. Hundreds of thousands of young people joined hands. This chain stretched from the Baltic Sea to the Tatra Mountains. It symbolized unity for humanitarianism.
In 1993 Kotański created Markot. It is a movement out of homelessness. It involves centers for homeless people and lone mothers. It also helps handicapped people and the terminally ill. Kotański also developed a help system for people coming out of prison.
Park Marka Kotańskiego itself offers many attractions. These include a playground and two basketball courts. You can also find an outdoor gym and a dog run. There is also a volleyball court and a skatepark. Two soccer fields complete the sports facilities. Since 2010 the park has a seasonal ice rink.
The park covers 2.63 hectares. Additionally there is a playground near 1 Sierpnia Street. This playground adds another 0.83 hectares. The park also features an amphitheater.
