Why is Parelheiros so…green? That’s the question that popped into my head the first time I visited this sprawling district in southern São Paulo. Parelheiros isn’t what you picture when you think of a bustling metropolis. It’s a world away from the skyscrapers and frenetic energy of downtown. Parelheiros, the second largest district in São Paulo, is a vast expanse of protected springs, wetlands, and the vibrant green of the Atlantic Forest. This district plays a vital role in the lives of millions, as its reservoirs, Guarapiranga and Billings, supply nearly a third of Greater São Paulo’s electricity. Imagine the scale of this place, 153 square kilometers! And yet, so much of it remains uninhabited, a haven for nature. Parelheiros is home to not only lush forests, but also to two indigenous Guarani villages, Aldeia Krukutu and Morro da Saudade, adding another layer of cultural richness to this unique area. The history of Parelheiros is a blend of cultures. German immigrants arrived in the early 1800s, and the district’s name, meaning “pairs” in Portuguese, is said to originate from the horse races between the Germans and Brazilians. This area was previously called Santa Cruz, named after a cross placed by a devotee named Amaro de Pontes. Later, in the mid-20th century, following World War II, a wave of Japanese immigrants settled in Parelheiros, particularly in the neighborhoods of Jaceguava and Casa Grande, contributing their agricultural expertise to the region. A drive through Parelheiros reveals a landscape dotted with neighborhoods like these, each with its own story to tell. The district is also home to the Colonia Crater, a geological marvel spanning 4.4 kilometers in diameter. Formed millions of years ago by a meteorite impact, the crater adds another dimension to Parelheiros’ natural wonders. Despite environmental protections, Parelheiros faces challenges from urbanization, including irregular housing, deforestation, and water pollution. The district’s remoteness and limited public transportation create difficulties for residents, many of whom have the lowest purchasing power in the city. Yet, Parelheiros retains a distinct character, a unique blend of rural tranquility and urban development, a place where nature and culture intersect.
