Did you know that Parco Rignon spans over 46000 square meters? It is nestled in Torino’s southwest, in the Santa Rita district. Let’s explore its history.

The area was a simple rural farmhouse in 1650. Don Giambattista Amoretti, a young priest, bought it. He became almoner and diplomat to the Duke’s court. Amoretti gained favor with important figures. These included Marquis Filippo San Martino di Agliè, Madama Cristina di Francia, and Carlo Emanuele II di Savoia. He was also appointed Abbot of the court.

Amoretti financed the farmhouse’s renovation until his death in 1686. It became a commendam with an L-shaped layout. The property passed to Carlo Giacinto Amoretti. He financed further renovations after the Siege of Torino in 1706.

In 1760 Marquis Giambattista Amoretti di Osasio started building Villa Amoretti. The villa stands at the park’s center. Turin architect Plantery designed it. The building has a raised ground floor. Symmetrical stairways lead up to it. Above are two more residential floors.

The property later passed to the Rignon family. The park got its name from them. Count Vittorio Rignon significantly renovated the property between 1900 and 1910. The villa was completely remodeled. The surrounding park was redesigned. It featured an elegant Art Nouveau garden. A perimeter wall with three entrances was added. The original commendam was demolished. In its place, stables and a semicircular building were constructed. Engineer Giovanni Chevalley designed this building. It served as an orangery. You can still see it near the Via Filadelfia entrance.

In 1970 the City of Torino purchased the villa and grounds. It became a public park. The villa became a Civic Library. It serves as a strategic point for the Santa Rita neighborhood. The villa was further renovated in 2001. An underground meeting room was added. A new library pavilion was built in 2005.

Parco Rignon is more than just a green space. It is a place for community activities. The library draws many visitors. The park hosts musical events and neighborhood festivals in summer. It has even hosted the Teatro Stabile.

The park features tall trees. The entrance has a double row of linden trees. Beech, oak, and horse chestnut trees also grow here. Seasonal flowerbeds add color. Villa Amoretti is considered one of Torino’s most beautiful villas. It houses the library. The “Salone dei Centomila” hosts meetings and associations. It was once a carriage storage area.

Parco Rignon offers something for everyone. There are playgrounds for children. A bocce court provides recreation. The park is accessible to people with disabilities. You can cycle through its paths. Today Parco Rignon stands as a testament to Turin’s history and community spirit. It is a place where nature, culture, and recreation come together.
