Established in 1991 Parco Naturale della Collina di Superga safeguards a remarkable area. This area is rich in environmental architectural and landscape features. These features remain well-preserved despite Turin’s proximity. The park’s location amidst a system of hills is unique. Its position between the Alps and the sea contributes to its rich flora. You’ll find microthermal species like beech trees and Scotch pine. Mediterranean species such as manna ash and holly also thrive here.
The most common forests are mixed broadleaf woodlands. These woodlands are mainly oak and chestnut trees. Until recently these were cultivated for timber and fruit. Near the Panoramic Road of the Hills large formations of exotic plants exist. These are mainly conifers introduced in recent decades for reforestation and ornamental purposes. The park’s edge shows intensive cultivation. However the landscape is dominated by the Basilica of Superga. This Baroque masterpiece by Filippo Juvarra is a stunning sight.
The wildlife is abundant. Foxes badgers beech martens and even wild boars roam the hills. Birds of prey like buzzards and sparrowhawks soar above. Nocturnal owls also call this park home. Woodpeckers hoopoes and many passerines add to the park’s avian diversity.
Geologically the hills are formed from sedimentary rocks. These rocks are sandstone conglomerates and marls. They are often rich in fossils. These fossils reveal the hills’ ancient origins. They were formed on the ocean floor around 40 million years ago. Tectonic shifts linked to the Alps’ formation lifted these rocks forming the hills we see today.
Parco Naturale della Collina di Superga covers approximately 801.95 hectares. It spans the municipalities of Baldissero Torinese Pino Torinese San Mauro Torinese and Turin.
