Hidden within Torino lies Parco Miraflores, once a jewel in the Savoy crown, now a whisper of its former glory. Parco Miraflores began as a wedding gift, a symbol of love from Duke Carlo Emanuele I to his young bride, Caterina d’Asburgo-Spagna. He named it Miraflores, “look at the flowers,” in 1585, a tribute to her Spanish heritage and the blossoming gardens he envisioned. Imagine the scene: a magnificent castle rising from a natural terrace, overlooking the meandering Sangone River. Its central structure, three stories tall, was meant to be flanked by grand wings, a testament to the duke’s ambition. Although the full vision never materialized, Parco Miraflores flourished. Visitors marveled at its opulent interiors, “immense halls, long series of connecting rooms…walls and ceilings gleaming with precious tapestries, elegant paintings, and gold.” Outside, “a vast plain extended below, over groves with trees arranged in beautiful order, over fertile fields covered with flowers, vineyards, and large expanses of meadows: a true labyrinth of delights.” Parco Miraflores was more than just a beautiful retreat. It played a key role in the tumultuous “War of the Two Cognates.” In 1636, it became the residence of Maria Cristina, “Madama Reale,” regent for her young son. When her brothers-in-law challenged her rule, Parco Miraflores became a target. French troops, supporting Maria Cristina, may have fired upon the castle from across the Sangone. This conflict may be the origin of nearby street names like “Via Accampamento” and “Via Polveriera.” The glory of Parco Miraflores faded in the late 17th century as the Savoy family shifted their attention to other residences. By 1741, the castle had become a tobacco processing plant, a far cry from its regal past. Finally abandoned, the castle was demolished in the late 19th century. Even the Sangone, once a picturesque backdrop, changed course, erasing the river bend that embraced the park. Today, as you walk along the bike path towards the Sangone, you can still find traces of Parco Miraflores. The ruins of a grand staircase, supported by arches, hint at the grandeur that once was. These remnants are a portal to a forgotten world, a reminder of a time when Parco Miraflores was a place of flowers, feasts, and fierce battles.
