How many shades of green can a single hillside hold? Here at Parco della Rimembranza, it seems like an endless spectrum. The Parco della Rimembranza, often called Parco della Maddalena, isn’t just a park. It’s a living tapestry woven from nature, history, and memory. Perched atop Turin’s highest point, the Bric della Maddalena, the park offers breathtaking views. But the real story lies within its sprawling 90 hectares. Originally envisioned as a “People’s Park” in the early 1900s, Parco della Rimembranza took on a new significance after the First World War. In 1925, it was dedicated to the memory of Turin’s fallen soldiers. King Vittorio Emanuele III himself graced the inauguration ceremony. Over 21,000 trees stand sentinel here. Many are non-native species, like conifers, creating an arboretum of diverse foliage. The original section of Parco della Rimembranza holds a poignant tribute. Each of the 4,787 fallen soldiers from Turin is remembered with a plaque affixed to a tree. A silent forest of names whispering stories of sacrifice. At the heart of the park, the Faro della Vittoria (Victory Lighthouse) commands attention. This imposing bronze statue, a gift from Senator Giovanni Agnelli, commemorates the 10th anniversary of Italy’s victory in World War I. The words of Gabriele D’Annunzio, etched at its base, add another layer of remembrance. From the gravel-covered piazza surrounding the statue, the panorama unfolds. The city of Turin stretches out below, framed by the majestic sweep of the Western Alps. Imagine standing here in the crisp mountain air, the scent of pine needles mingling with the city’s distant hum. You’re not just taking in a view. You’re breathing in history, surrounded by the quiet dignity of remembrance at Parco della Rimembranza.
