Have you ever imagined how resilient faith can be? The Parafia Świetych Apostołów Piotra i Pawła in Warsaw-Pyry is a testament to the strength of spirit. It’s a beautiful place built around a past fraught with challenges and turmoil. The church’s cornerstone was laid on June 29, 1947, in the heart of Poland’s post-war reconstruction. The initial construction began in 1946 but communist authorities interrupted it in 1951 for reasons that were never disclosed. The church was, however, secretly built in defiance of the order. The bell tower was constructed, completed on July 2, 1971, just two months after the tragic events of December 1970. That day, the victorious Christ’s Cross was placed on the steeple. The bells, named “Peter and Paul”, “Stefan”, and “Henryk”, were consecrated in 1973 along with the church itself by Stefan Cardinal Wyszyński, the Primate of Poland. To commemorate the millenium of Poland’s baptism, the inscription “966-1966 Faithful to God, the Cross and the Gospel, to the Holy Church and Its Shepherds” was carved on the front wall. Along with the names of the local people, the church’s most dedicated builders. The church, designed by Professor Antoni Jawornicki and built in the Italian-inspired Neo-Romanesque style, is a stark and beautiful reminder of the faith that prevailed in the face of adversity.
